Fishing Rigs

General Rigs:

Bottom Fishing:
Weight first bottom rigs utilize a bell sinker at the end of the line with a hook approximately 12-24 inches above the sinker. This allows for the bait to be held slightly off bottom.

Hook first bottom fishing rig allows for the hook to freely bounce up and down off the bototm with the current.

Drift Fishing:
Split shot drift rigs utilize varying sized split shot about a foot or two above a hook.

The lightest weight goes closest to the hook and as you moive further away the split shot get heavier. Typically the splitshot are spaced 1/2 to 1 inch apart. Weight is determined by depth of water and speed of current - more current = more weight.

Specialized rigs:

Mackeral Rig:
A basic mackeral rig consists of a set of mackeral feathers terminated by a diamond lead jig. WARNING! Make sure if you are utilizing this rig your line is strong enough and you have at leats a medium action rod.

Its important that the terminating diamond jig is heavy enough to cast a good distance but not so heavy as to constantly snag bottom on the retreive. Any heavy lead lure can be substituted for the diamond jig.

For Terminating Jig I typically use:

Gibbs Minnow 2 or 3 oz.
Either Blue or green.

For Mackeral pretty much any colour will do.
